How will this course benefit me?

This course provides an introduction to various drawing and water-based media.  It enables learners to explore their artistic ability and gain confidence in valuable practical skills and when developing ideas.

What are the entry requirements?

Suitable for complete beginners through to intermediate level, learners will be expected to follow the course programme and attend regularly and on time to ensure progression.

What will I learn?

During the 15-week course we will explore basic drawing and painting techniques using a wide variety of dry and/or water-based media, to include pencils, charcoal, felt-tip, watercolour, oil pastel transfer and acrylic paint. Learners should see this course as an opportunity to experiment with the techniques taught to produce increasingly personal pieces of work.

How will the course be delivered?

Learners will be taught in a relaxed atmosphere. A series of projects will be set by the tutor to encourage personal responses. You will receive one-to-one guidance and support from the tutor.

The sessions may include tutor presentations, tutorials and practical activities with the class as a whole, although the key focus is on individual exploration.

While the emphasis is on individual development, you will gain much from discussing and sharing work and ideas with other members of the group and this is important to the ethos of the class.

How will my learning be assessed?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor who will assess you continually and informally.  An Individual Learning Plan will help you monitor your progress and reach your targets.

What are the extra costs?

Learners must provide their own art materials.  An A3 sketch pad (cartridge paper), plus 2B or 4B pencils and a rubber will be needed for the first class. Learners will be advised on further materials during the course.

Please note that the cost of materials for this course is likely to be a minimum of £40.

What can I progress to next?

To any specialist art course within the Institute, e.g. watercolour painting, pottery or photography, as well as art courses in further education.

Health & safety requirements?

You will need to follow the instructions on health and safety procedures given by the tutor. Learners are asked to bring materials that they have confirmed are non-hazardous/low risk. Please wear old clothes as using various different media can be messy.
