How will this course benefit me?

If you would like to learn how to paint in watercolour, but have only a little experience or no experience, then this is the course for you. Watercolour can be a lot of fun and to start you will learn how to lay washes of colour and how to mix colours. We will then move on to painting from still life objects and then painting from photographs or images that interest you. The course will enable you to work at your own pace and act as an introduction to the medium to show how accessible and rewarding painting in watercolour can be.

What are the entry requirements?

None, only a willingness to learn and an enthusiasm for painting.

What will I learn?

We will be painting washes onto paper and looking at paint effects and how to mix colours so that your knowledge and experience can grow. We will start by practising colour mixing and painting spheres, so that you can create form. We will learn all the basic skills such as lifting out and 'wet-on-wet'. This can then be developed into painting images that interest you.

How will the course be delivered?

The course will be delivered through demonstrations and individual advice given whilst you work. The aim is to create a helpful supportive environment so that all the learners feel involved and engaged in the activities.

How will my learning be assessed?

The tutor will give helpful and practical advice throughout.

What are the extra costs?

To start watercolour painting you only need a basic set of paints – i.e. cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow and a permanent magenta or an alizarin red. A plastic water pot (NOT glass) and nylon brushes sizes 6 and 10. Watercolour paper pad size A4 or A3, plus a 2B pencil and a graphite rubber.

None of the materials will be provided by the tutor.

What can I progress to next?

To other courses within the Institute, e.g. Painting in Watercolour (All Levels) or Botanical Illustration (All Levels).

Health & Safety requirements?

Standard teaching room, low level risks.
